In the summer of 2023, I had the amazing opportunity to intern abroad with a fashion company. My role was as a tailor for +39 Manufacturing, a company that assists in creating garments and fashion collections for brand names. As a tailor, I worked with the director of pattern–making and altering a variety of patterns to the specifications of the client. Some garments I worked on were shirts, blouses, women's and men's coats, dresses of all kinds, rompers, skirts, pants, and more. The language barrier was difficult to overcome, despite the 2-weeks of Italian classes I had taken before starting, but it was nice that my supervisor spoke English. As I learned the work culture of the company and as my supervisor saw my work ethic, we began to understand each other more and more. I became comfortable asking questions and she trusted me in the work that was asked of me. I showed an interest in understanding the why of what she would teach me and in clarifying step by step the alterations that needed to be done.
